Imaging tests after a heart procedure: When you need them - and when you don't

An imaging test can help your doctor see how well your heart is doing if you have had a surgery to fix your heart and your symptoms have returned or are getting worse. Symptoms may indicate that a problem has returned and the test results can help your doctor decide if you need to increase your medicine or if you need to have another procedure. It is common to have a follow up test if it has been more than five years since your surgery or two years since your stent procedure.

If you do not have heart disease or heart related symptoms, having an imaging test every year to check your heart will not prevent a heart attack or help you live longer. Unnecessary testing can lead to more invasive tests and exposure to radiation.
