Imaging tests for a headache: When you need them - and when you don't

A CT or MRI of the head rarely shows why a headache occurs or helps the doctor to manage your symptoms. Most people with migraines or tension headaches do not have a serious underlying problem. Having a CT of the head can expose you to unnecessary radiation that equals between 25 and 300 chest X-rays.

Imaging for headaches might be necessary if the neurological exam performed by your doctor is not normal or if the headache is accompanied with fever, seizures or loss of vision or speech.

Ways to Save

Prices for MRI and CT scans have some of the greatest price variances in healthcare. The most important factor impacting the cost of your care will be which facility you use. Some imaging centers charge three to five times more than other centers. Hospitals are usually the most expensive, and “free-standing” (non-hospital) centers are usually less expensive.
