Choosing Wisely®
Treating Sleep Problems: Antipsychotic Drugs Are Usually Not The Best Choice

If you often have trouble falling or staying asleep, you have insomnia. It can get in the way of working, driving, and even thinking. And it can cause health problems.

Your doctor may recommend short-term relief, such as a low dose of Melatonin, if you need help sleeping for only a night or two.

If you often have trouble sleeping - three or more nights a week for a month or more - you may have an underlying cause that a doctor can help diagnose and treat. Your doctor may recommend a sleep study for diagnosis. Treatable causes of insomnia may include sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, frequent heartburn, and urinating often at night - which could be a sign of diabetes, enlarged prostate, or a UTI.

Ways to Save

Prices for a sleep study can vary 4x or more depending on where it’s performed. Sleep studies at a hospital or hospital-affiliated facility are usually more expensive than having the test performed at an independent facility, or even at your own home. If your doctor recommends a sleep study, be sure to ask if you are a candidate for an at-home study, which is typically the least expensive. If your doctor thinks you need a facility-based study, consider an independent sleep study specialty clinic, which is usually the best value for overnight studies.
